harvest welcome

Harvest time is a good time to remind ourselves of the seasons and of God’s provision.  Young children could be forgiven for thinking that all the food that we eat, not only comes from, but originates in supermarkets.  A school trip to the farm can be a real eye opener for them. How easy it is in our modern world of mass production and freezers to forget about the seasons and harvest time.  As far as our food is concerned nowadays, the seasons seem to be almost irrelevant. Of course they are not and a trip into the countryside at this time of year reminds us of that, as we see the farmers reaping what they have sown.

Genesis 8:22 “As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease.” This promise of God is very reassuring but there is another harvest that the Bible refers to and concerns each one of us; the harvest of souls! In the last book of the Bible; Revelation, verses 15-16 of chapter 14 make it very clear, with Biblical imagery, that a day is coming when the final and most important harvest of all will take place: “Then another angel came out of the temple and called in a loud voice to him who was sitting on the cloud, ‘Take your sickle and reap, because the time to reap has come, for the harvest of the earth is ripe.’  So he who was seated on the cloud swung his sickle over the earth, and the earth was harvested.”

Those verses refer to a real event in the future that will happen when Jesus Christ returns.  Those who, in their lives, have put their faith in him will be gathered together and welcomed into his Kingdom.  Those who have rejected Jesus in their lives will not be welcomed into his Kingdom. Here is the “Good News”; you are invited to join his Kingdom.  You can spend eternity in heaven with the very one who made that possible for you by his death on the cross, Jesus Christ. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16).
